This page provides news and information about the ongoing Congressional investigation of federal law enforcement agencies including BATFE, FBI, and the Department of Justice and White House involvement in “Operation Gunrunner,” “Operation Castaway,” “Operation Wide Receiver,” “Fast and Furious,” and other, similar government operations involving licensed firearms dealers in Phoenix, Dallas, Indiana, New Mexico and potentially other locations. In these operations, government law enforcement agency officials encouraged gun shop owners to sell weapons to straw purchasers for resale to smuggling cartels under the premise that the straw purchasers would lead agents to the cartel heads. These operations failed because there was no way to track the movement of the guns. As far as we know, the agencies, with the exception of one or two concerned agents that turned whistleblower, did not attempt to track the weapons.
As many as 2,000 guns ended up crossing into Mexico illegally. When two of the “walked” guns showed up at the murder scene of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry in Peck Canyon north of Nogales, AZ, a concerned handful of ATF agent exposed the scandal to Congress. Not long after that, more “walked” guns showed up at the murder scene of ICE agent Jaime Zapata who was working in Mexico. Congressmen Issa and Grassley have been holding investigative hearings ever since.
This issue is of utmost concern to SACPA because ATF “walked” weapons have been used to commit one or more murders on southern Arizona ranches. We live and work on our ranches and our lives are directly endangered by careless and unethical decisions of government agencies. Our Border Patrol Agents are our first line of defense. We are outraged at the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. Our lives and our families are in direct mortal danger now and for the unforeseeable future because of these ill-conceived government programs.
